# Experimental Design
The **independent variable** is manipulated by the experimenter (such as time or concentrations). The **dependent variable** is being measured and changes in response to the experimental parameters.
The **positive control** should be detected. If it is detected, it demonstrates that the experiment is working properly.
The **negative control** should not be detected. If it is detected, it demonstrates that the reagents are contaminated.
