# Transcription
## Major Stages
1. Initiation
2. Elongation
3. Termination
### Initiation
>basically our version of [[Operons|operons]] found in prokaryotes (pathways yo)
![[Transcription Initiation Complex.png|300]]
The **promoter** region of a DNA strand indicates where the RNA polymerase needs to bind to so that transcription can occur.
The non-template DNA strand is in the 5' -> 3' direction while the template is being read in the 3' to 5' direction.
Protein **transcription factors** group together at the promoter region and acts as an indicator for the RNA polymerase to bind.
### Elongation
RNA is extended by addition of new nucleotides to the free 3' hydroxyl of the growing strand
### Termination
The methods of termination differs between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
## Post-Transcriptional Modifications
The **poly-A tail** is added to the mRNA to protect it from other enzymes trying to consume it as it travels in the cytoplasm
